Prometric is now the smallest of the three national insurance exam vendors. It administers the producer licensing exams in five states - Maryland, New Mexico, Utah, Vermont and Virginia - after Massachusetts moved to Pearson VUE on July 22, 2026 and Arizona moved to PSI earlier. If you are licensing in one of those five, this guide gives the verified question count, time limit, passing standard and fee for each line, explains the free Prometric practice exam and what it leaves out, and sets out the registration, remote-testing, ID and retake rules from the state licensing bulletins.

Which states use Prometric for the insurance exam?

Maryland (Maryland Insurance Administration), New Mexico (Office of Superintendent of Insurance), Utah (Insurance Department), Vermont (Department of Financial Regulation) and Virginia (Bureau of Insurance, State Corporation Commission). Each state publishes a Licensing Information Bulletin through Prometric; the figures below come from those bulletins, linked from each state's practice page. If an older guide lists Massachusetts, Arizona or another state under Prometric, it is out of date - the current map for all 51 jurisdictions is in who runs the insurance exam in each state.

The free Prometric insurance practice exam

Unlike Pearson VUE, which sells practice tests for $19.95, Prometric gives its practice exams away. Its practice-exam FAQ and the Virginia and Vermont bulletins describe them the same way:

  • Three exams - Life (LIPA), Health (HIPA) and Property and Casualty (PIPA) - at no cost; the life and health exams are also offered in Spanish.
  • 50 questions each, delivered in random order, with a "study mode" that tells you after each question whether you were right.
  • You get the number correct, not a pass or fail, and you have 24 hours from starting a session to finish it.
  • No state-specific questions. Prometric's own wording: "Your state's laws, rules and regulations may differ from the content within the practice exam."

So the free Prometric exam is a fair preview of the general section's style, and a poor guide to the state section, which is where candidates lose marks. Pair it with a state-specific mock exam that mirrors your real exam's length and includes state-law questions.

The Prometric life insurance exam by state

Vermont105 (100 scored)120 minNot published$73
Virginia105 (90 scored)120 minNot published$35

Utah, Vermont and Virginia do not publish a numeric passing score in the bulletin; the score report shows the percentage correct and pass or fail. Vermont's current registration form (page 28 of the bulletin effective March 18, 2026) shows $73 for the life exam; an older form on the next page still shows $52, so expect the higher figure.

Virginia tests property and casualty as one combined exam with no single-line option. Maryland, New Mexico, Utah and Vermont offer a combined exam and separate property and casualty exams; the combined exam is scored as one result and must be passed as a whole.

How to register for a Prometric insurance exam

  1. Check prelicensing - none of the five requires it. Maryland repealed its prelicensing education requirement (MIA Bulletin 24-19), and the New Mexico, Utah, Vermont and Virginia bulletins list only the exam, so you can register as soon as you are ready; the state-by-state table is in insurance license requirements by state.
  2. Create a Prometric profile at the state's page on prometric.com (Maryland: prometric.com/exams/mia) using your legal name, date of birth and Social Security number exactly as they will appear on the license application - Maryland warns that a mismatch stops the license from being issued after you pass.
  3. Register, pay and schedule in one sitting online, or by phone; Virginia and Vermont also accept fax and mail registration with a credit-card form, which Utah describes as a slower two-step process. The fee is non-refundable.
  4. Choose a test center or remote proctoring. Maryland, Utah, Vermont and Virginia offer the exam either at any Prometric test center in the United States or remotely through Prometric's ProProctor application, which needs a computer (tablets are prohibited) with a camera, microphone and internet connection, and a system check before you schedule. Vermont currently requires remote appointments to be booked by phone.
  5. Use the registration within 90 days. In Virginia a registration expires 90 calendar days after processing; if it lapses, or if you fail, you register and pay again.

Rescheduling, cancelling and exam day

Virginia and Vermont require changes or cancellations at least 24 hours before the appointment; with proper notice there is no charge to move within the testing window and an online payment is refunded to the card, while a late change, a no-show or arriving too late to test forfeits the fee. Arrive 30 minutes early. Virginia requires two valid forms of identification, the primary one government-issued with a current photo and signature and a name that matches the registration exactly, including suffixes such as Jr. or III. Unscored experimental questions are mixed in (five in Utah and Vermont, 10 in Maryland, 15 in Virginia).

At the end of the exam the score appears on screen and, in Virginia, an emailed score report follows with the overall percentage and the percentage correct in each outline section, so a failed attempt tells you exactly where to study. Duplicate reports come from Prometric's score-report portal.

Retaking a failed Prometric exam

Virginia requires a 24-hour wait before booking again and, after a third failure, a 30-calendar-day wait required by Virginia law. The Utah and Vermont bulletins we read set no waiting period: a failed candidate registers again and pays the fee. Utah adds a deadline on the other side - the license application and fee must be submitted within 90 days of passing, or the exam must be retaken.

How to pass the Prometric insurance exam

The free Prometric practice exam covers the general section; the state section comes from your state's insurance code and is not in the practice exam at all. Take a full-length timed mock for your state first, drill the topics you missed in quiz mode, give the state law its own study block, and book when two or three consecutive mocks sit comfortably above 70%. Line-specific plans are in how to pass the life insurance exam on the first try and property and casualty exam prep.

Start with your state: Maryland, New Mexico, Utah, Vermont or Virginia. Candidates in the 27 Pearson VUE states should read the Pearson VUE insurance exam guide instead, and PSI candidates the PSI life insurance exam guide.

Is the Prometric insurance practice test free?

Yes. Prometric offers Life, Health and Property and Casualty practice exams at no cost, 50 questions each, with a study mode that marks each answer. They contain no state-specific questions, so they preview the general section only; your state's laws, rules and regulations are not covered.

Virginia requires a 24-hour wait before booking again and a 30-day wait after a third failure, under Virginia law. The Utah and Vermont bulletins set no waiting period; you register again and pay the fee. In Virginia a registration also expires after 90 days, and in Utah the license application must be filed within 90 days of passing or the exam must be retaken.
