Why insurance exams differ by state
Insurance licensing is regulated state by state, so the exam you sit depends on where you apply. Every exam is built from two parts: a national section covering insurance concepts that are broadly the same everywhere, and a state law section covering your state's licensing rules, producer duties, and consumer protections. That is why most of your studying transfers between states - and why the details still matter.
What changes from state to state is the structure: the number of questions, the time limit, the passing standard, the exam fee, whether prelicensing education is required, and even how many exams you must take. Some states test Property and Casualty as a single combined exam; others treat them as two entirely separate licenses. Each state page below lists the details we have verified against that state's official candidate handbook, with the source cited.
How to use these state pages
- Pick your state and license line to see verified exam facts - question count, time limit, passing standard, fee, and testing vendor.
- Take the timed mock exam. Where a state publishes its format, our mock exam mirrors the real question count and time limit so practice feels like test day.
- Use quiz mode to drill weak topics, and read the explanation on every question - including the ones you answered correctly.
- Follow the link to your state insurance department to confirm current requirements before you schedule.
Which license line should you choose?
Life insurance covers policy types, provisions and riders, beneficiaries, underwriting, annuities, and taxation. It pairs naturally with financial planning work.
Health insurance covers policy provisions, disability income, group coverage, Medicare and Medicaid basics, and the Affordable Care Act rules producers are tested on. Many candidates take Life and Health together.
Property & Casualty covers homeowners and dwelling forms, commercial property, liability and negligence, auto, workers compensation, and claims. It has the largest vocabulary of the three lines and the steadiest renewal income.
Every practice test on this site is free, requires no registration, and includes a full explanation for each question. Prefer to study offline? Download the free questions and answers PDFs, or browse everything on the mock tests hub.
