How the North Carolina Property & Casualty exam compares

The North Carolina Property & Casualty exam is 60 questions, 75 minutes, a scaled passing score of 70 - separate Property and Casualty licenses/exams - no combined P&C exam. The examination fee is $45 per exam attempt.

It is shorter than the typical Property & Casualty exam of about 145 questions, so each item carries more weight.

North Carolina requires no prelicensing course, so you can sit as soon as you are ready. That puts the whole burden of preparation on self-study and practice testing.

Mirrors the Property exam - North Carolina tests Property and Casualty separately.

Because a large share of the real exam is North Carolina law, this practice bank includes 18 questions written specifically on North Carolina statutes and regulations, each citing the provision it comes from.

Property & Casualty questions reviewed by Rebecca Lawson and Robert Hayes — Property & Casualty, 11 years' experience, Phoenix, AZ; Property & Casualty and Personal Lines, 13 years' experience, Denver, CO.

Figures above are taken from NC Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook (Pearson VUE) and were verified in July 2026. Requirements change - confirm current details with your state insurance department before you book.

North Carolina state law on the exam: 13 of 55 questions on the Property exam and 15 of 55 on the Casualty exam

  • Contract of insurance and the Commissioner of Insurance (G.S. 58-1-10, 58-2)
  • General regulations for insurance (58-3) and unauthorized insurers (Article 28)
  • Licensing of agents, limited representatives and adjusters (Article 33); continuing education (11 NCAC 6A .0800)
  • Insurance Information and Privacy Protection Act (Article 39) and unfair trade practices (58-63)
  • False pretenses and cheats (G.S. 14-100)
  • The North Carolina Rate Bureau (Article 36) and, on the Casualty exam, the Motor Vehicle Reinsurance Facility (Article 37), the Post-Assessment Insurance Guaranty Association (Article 48), the motor vehicle liability policy and cancellation rules (G.S. 20-279.21, 20-310), and the Workers' Compensation Act (Chapter 97)

North Carolina scores the general and state parts as one exam, so there is no separate state-law pass mark - but at 13 to 15 questions the state section is roughly a quarter of the test. The Rate Bureau and the Reinsurance Facility are unique to North Carolina and rarely covered by national study material.

Study Tip

Study the explanation, not the answer. The real exam words questions differently than any practice bank, so understanding why an answer is correct matters far more than memorizing which letter it was.
